Removing an E-bike Battery with a Qibbel Air Rear Seat: What Are Your Options?

On many e-bikes, the battery is located underneath the luggage carrier. To charge the battery indoors, it often needs to be slid out of the bike towards the rear or upwards. In some cases, a rear child seat can get in the way.

We are therefore regularly asked whether we can make an opening or cut-out in the Qibbel Air rear seat so that the battery can still be removed.

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Creating a cut-out in the child seat may compromise its safety. Fortunately, there are other ways to create enough space to remove and charge your e-bike battery.

Why can't an opening be made in the rear seat?

The shape of a child bike seat is not only designed for comfort. The side panels, leg protection and footrests protect your child's legs and feet and help prevent them from coming into contact with the rear wheel or spokes.

The size and position of the openings in the seat are also important. Children should not be able to easily insert their hands or fingers into openings where they could become trapped.

The Qibbel Air rear seat has therefore been designed and tested as a complete product in accordance with the applicable safety standards. Sawing, drilling or otherwise creating an opening changes the tested design. We cannot compromise on your child's safety.

Solution 1: Position the child seat differently on the luggage carrier

Depending on your type of bike, the luggage carrier and the direction in which the battery is removed, it may help to position the rear seat slightly differently on the luggage carrier.

Sometimes just a few centimetres are enough to allow the battery to be removed.

Always pay attention to the centre of gravity marking on the child seat. This marking must not be positioned more than 10 centimetres behind the rear axle.

Do not move the child seat too far backwards simply to create more space. An incorrect position may affect the bike's stability and handling.

Also check that:

  • the child seat is fully and securely attached to the luggage carrier;

  • the luggage carrier is suitable for the combined weight of the seat and your child;

  • the safety strap is correctly attached to the frame;

  • the battery can be removed without force or contact with the child seat;

  • the seat has no movement after repositioning.

Solution 2: Choose a Qibbel Air with MIK HD

Do you remove the battery from your bike almost every day? Then a click system is often the most convenient solution.

The Qibbel Air rear seat with MIK HD can be detached from the luggage carrier without tools. This allows you to remove the child seat in just a few seconds, take the battery out of the bike and click the seat back into place afterwards.

This is not only convenient for charging the battery. It also allows you to quickly free up the luggage carrier when cycling without your child or when using panniers.

Please note: MIK is not the same as MIK HD

A child seat with MIK HD can only be used on a luggage carrier with an integrated MIK HD profile. A standard MIK luggage carrier is not suitable for mounting a child seat.

You can usually recognise a compatible luggage carrier by the MIK HD logo on the carrier. Always choose a child seat that is specifically designed for the mounting system on your bike.

Does your bike have an AVS+ luggage carrier? A Qibbel Air rear seat with AVS+ is also available. This system works according to the same practical principle: the seat can be quickly unclipped from a compatible system carrier.

Which solution is right for your bike?

Can you easily remove the battery after making a small adjustment to the seat position? In that case, you usually do not need to purchase a different child seat.

Do you remove the battery every day and does the rear seat remain in the way? Then a Qibbel Air with MIK HD or AVS+ may be a practical solution, provided your bike has the appropriate system carrier.
