Which bike seat for which age? The complete guide
A child can travel in a bike seat from around 9 months, once they can sit upright independently and keep their head up while wearing a helmet. There are three stages: a front seat (9 months–3 years, up to 15 kg), a rear seat (9 months–6 years, up to 22 kg) and a 6+ seat (approx. 5–10 years, up to 35 kg).
From what age?
From around 9 months. The minimum age is not fixed but depends on your child's development: they must be able to sit independently and keep their head upright while wearing an EN1078-certified cycling helmet.
Front or rear seat?
Choose a front seat for younger children (up to approx. 3 years / 15 kg) and a rear seat as your child grows bigger and heavier (up to approx. 6 years / 22 kg). A front seat offers closer interaction and a better view, while a rear seat provides more space and comfort.
Up to what weight?
The maximum weight determines how long a seat can be used: front seat up to 15 kg, rear seat up to 22 kg, and a 6+ seat up to 35 kg. If your child weighs more than 22 kg but is not yet able to cycle independently, a 6+ seat is the ideal solution.

Is it safe? Buyer's checklist
When buying a bike seat, always check the safety standard first. Child bike seats up to 22 kg should comply with EN 14344. Additional TÜV certification is an added benefit.
What to check:
Does it comply with EN 14344 (for seats up to 22 kg)?
Does it have a secure harness and footrests with safety straps?
Is it compatible with your bike (mounting system/carrier)?
Is your child's weight within the seat's maximum limit?
Is the seat securely fitted without any movement?
Will it fit my (electric) bike?
Yes, in almost all cases — provided the mounting system is suitable. For carrier-mounted seats, the carrier should support at least 27 kg and be 11–17 cm wide. No suitable carrier? Choose a frame-mounted version (28–40 mm). Front seats are mounted to the stem (22–36 mm).
